El Piruli de La Habana

Quien se acuerda de los pirulis de La Habana?

An author from Vizcaya maintains that the Cuban pirulis, the precursor of today's lollipops, were invented by Jose Arechavaleta, the owner of a Cuban sugar mill. According to the unidentified author, Arechavaleta came up with the idea of using the "residual products" from his mill by creating a piece of hard candy (cone-shaped) attached to a stick. The piruli became so popular that it gave rise to the following pregon, or chanted sales pitch, which then became the following famous Cuban slogan:

"Piruli de La Habana, el que no compra no jama.

(Piruli from Havana, if you don't buy it, you can't eat it)
